I. M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University

The I. M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University) is the oldest, largest and leading Russian medical university and is the legal successor of the Medical Faculty of the Imperial Moscow University (IMU), established on January 25, 1755.

The first professors at the medical faculty of IMU were foreigners, but already in 1765, graduates of the medical faculty of IMU S. G. Zybelin and P. D. Veniaminov, having received the title of extraordinary professor, were recognized as "worthy to teach medicine and send it in practice".
In the twentieth century, our university has consistently maintained its position as the leader of domestic higher medical education. The clinical base was constantly expanding, the clinics were considered one of the best medical centers in the country, where tens of thousands of patients received qualified medical care every year.


In 2008 according to the results of the professional competition of Russia in the nomination "Higher School", MMA named after I. M. Sechenov was awarded the main award – the Platinum Ounce award.

 

July 20, 2010 MMA named after I. M. Sechenov was awarded the status of a university with the renaming to the First Moscow State Medical University named after I. M. Sechenov.


In 2010, the Clinical Center was reorganized, as a result of which University Clinical Hospitals were created. The Research Institute of Uronephrology and Human Reproductive Health was established. The Faculty of pre-university Education was opened. New specialties have been introduced into the educational process: "Biotechnology", "Bioengineering and Bioinformatics"," Clinical Psychology"," Pediatrics"," Social Work","Economics and Management at an enterprise in healthcare".


In 2011, the Research Institute of Sociology of Medicine, Health Economics and Medical Insurance was established. The Institute of Additional Professional Education has been opened. The Center for Innovative Educational Programs "Medicine of the Future"was created. On the basis of the First Sechenov Moscow State Medical University, a Volunteer center began its work, which trained volunteers in the direction of "Doping control" for the Olympic Games in Sochi-2014.

 

In 2012, the First lecture of the Nobel Prize winner in medicine and physiology, Australian doctor Barry James Marshall was held at the First Moscow State Medical University with the participation of the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation V. I. Skvortsova. The Blood Center is open. The Clinical Center of the University celebrated 115 years since its foundation. A clinic of coloproctology and minimally invasive surgery has been established. The Federal Center for Electronic Medical Education has started its work.

 

In 2013, a project was launched to create "Schools of Excellence" -author's educational courses created by leading representatives of the teaching staff of clinical departments. A Center for Master's programs has been created. The student sports club "Phoenix" has started its work.

 

In 2015, the First Sechenov Moscow State Medical University-the only one among the country's medical universities-entered the Project to increase the Competitiveness of leading Russian universities among the world's leading scientific and educational centers "5-100". In the same year, in September, the first foreign branch of the University was opened in Azerbaijan (Baku). In 2016, the Supervisory Board of the University began its work under the chairmanship of the Mayor of Moscow, S. S. Sobyanin. A Methodological accreditation center has been established. The Medical Rehabilitation Center has started working. In the same year, the Moscow City Hospital No. 61 became part of the Clinical Center, which became the base for the University Clinical Hospital No.4. The following clinics were established in it: Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, Faculty Therapy Clinic No. 2, Faculty Surgery Clinic No. 2, Polyclinic Therapy Clinic and Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine Clinic.

 

In the same year, the formation of the Scientific and Technological Park of Biomedicine of Sechenov University began. For this purpose, the Institute of Translational Medicine and Biotechnologies, the Institute of Personalized Medicine, and the Institute of Regenerative Medicine were created.

 

In 2018, the university established: the Institute of Bionic Technologies and Engineering, the Institute of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication, the Institute of Electronic Medical Education and the Institute of Digital Medicine. The traditions of medical education laid down at the IMU Faculty of Medicine are preserved in the First Sechenov Moscow State Medical University, which is currently the center of academic, scientific and resource excellence in the Russian medical education system. Sechenov University, based on the achievements of modern information technologies and new standards of education of the XXI century, trains highly qualified specialists.
