National Research University "Higher School of Economics"

The idea of the School was born at the turn of 1980-1990, when it became clear that the existing system of economic education in the country does not meet the requirements of the new political and economic situation. Then a group of teachers of the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University — Eugene Yasin, Yaroslav Kuzminov, Revold Entov, Oleg Ananyin, Rustem Nureyev-after several attempts to introduce the basics of "normal" economic theory into the curricula of existing universities, they realized the need to build a new economic school that would be based on the principles of world economic science from the very beginning. This meant providing students with tools for analyzing and predicting real processes, teaching them to work with statistics and economic models, and giving them a common language with the world community of professional economists.

Political activity is prohibited at the School. Teachers have the right to draw any conclusions, to defend socialist, Keynesian or liberal principles, if their arguments are based on a modern theoretical analysis of factors.

In 1996, the Higher School of Economics opened its first regional campus in Nizhny Novgorod. The following year, the School's campuses opened in St. Petersburg and Perm.

The School has an interesting tradition - it is a CROW: The crow has been considered a symbol of the Higher School of Economics for many years. It was invented by the artist Anna Arenstein, who illustrated a new information booklet about the HSE in 1996. Now the crow can be found on any HSE souvenir products, it has also become a symbol of the university's annual awards.

In 1997, the university became one of the first Russian universities to successfully implement on Russian soil (a few years before the start of the Bologna process) the so-called "two-degree program".

The Higher School of Economics and one of the leaders of economic education in the world — the London School of Economics (LSE) have created the International Institute of Economics and Finance (ICEF). The creation of the ICEF Bachelor's and Master's degree programs at the international level was made possible thanks to the financial support provided by the largest banks, companies and financial institutions: VTB24, Vneshtorgbank, Sberbank. Training on the programs from the first year began to be conducted in English, and graduates receive two diplomas at once.
